Change of Heart was typical Mary Calmes, but at least there is a reason everyone loves the protagonist and a reason his love interest is obsessed with him and controlling. It was a different sort of shifter story with a rather different world view. That part was refreshing. They still talk everything to death, though, saying the same things over and over and over again. The characters say "Look at me" too often, which I've noticed in previous books. I counted fifteen times where a character said it to Jin.
The only thing I didn't like about it was a couple of outright sexist comments by the MC such as: "It was my place, every male's place, to protect females." Gag. There's a difference between that and just making sure to not hurt women and maybe step in when she's really over her head. But in the same way, it's a woman's place to protect men when they're stupid. Like Logan at points in here. (Who agrees to a challenge when he has no idea what it means? Especially the leader of his people?)
But I am very eager to read the next one.
4.5 stars rounded down because of that sexist bullpucky.
Happy ending? Well duh, this is a Mary Calmes book. Basically an HEA, although of course there is angst in the next one about the realaionship. Isn't there always?
